What uplifts you?

Here is a quote from IMDB;

"It looked like it would be an emotional and uplifting drama. But instead it was a painfully hard struggle to just barely get into a game and all he got to do was sack another player. He didn't score any points.* I don't see what the big fuss is about. This movie just didn't do much for me. I guess I just expected more."

The writer is referring to RUDY, in my opinion, one of the most uplifting and emotional dramas to ever be released by Hollywood. Can he not see that the very reasons he enumerates as arguments AGAINST the film being uplifting and emotional are what make it incredibly so? "...painfully hard struggle... barely get into the game...."

Effort, determination, desire and tenacity. Words that are missing from the vocabulary of many of day's youth. It isn't scoring points that makes the hero. Being there and excelling are the reward. Hard work brings about accomplishment. The comment I've quoted must be the musing of a teen aged male. I have no proof that he is but I'd bet my last dollar on it. The number of horror films that populate his lists makes it difficult to believe it could be anyone else. Okay, perhaps a man-child.

Would The Shawshank Redemption be disappointing to him because it took Andy almost 20 years to tunnel out of the prison? Could he imagine that Luke's final shot to blow up the Death Star in Star Wars was anything more than just a fluke? Perhaps he thinks Casablanca's a bore as well since only one Nazi is killed on the screen and at the end of the movie? Would The Great Escape have been a colossal waste of time in his mind as only 3 made it to freedom and over 70 were murdered at the end? Why couldn't Steve McQueen's motorcycle fly?

This person listed Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events (another thing pointing to a teenager) in the top 10 of films that have "character." Did anyone see that movie? I am not going to berate his choices but we all know that his taste in movies will change when his voice does. I'll save recommending We are Marshall until that day.

*P.S. Rudy was a defensive player so scoring points wasn't his true purpose in the line-up.

I am out of the loop and I'm not certain if I should be proud or concerned.

I walked past my local Blockbuster one day last week and noticed that the store is closing. I knew that the US side of the corporation had declared bankruptcy but I didn't know the same thing happened in Canada. I notice on the door stated that this location would be closing at the end of the month and gift cards/certificates were no longer be accepted there. The company would still honour them, just not at locations involved with the downsizing.

Time for my late father to visit... Let me tell you when... 8mm, 16mm, 35mm, 70mm, 110mm, 1/4 inch video tape, VHS or Beta, Laser Discs, DVDs, Bluerays... How many of you were in the AV club in grade school, high school, university? Leave the fan running once you turn off the lamp to allow the bulb to cool. Are bulbs used any more? Anywhere? No LCD, LED, Hi-Def, THX, Dolby when I grew up. One television in the house until 1974 when my parents bought a 2nd hand colour television. The old black and white went to their room. It would take that thing weeks to warm up. The sound would come in right away but the picture, well let's just say it was like the opening lines from Casablanca; we would wait, and wait, and wait, and wait.

I always loved it when, after being on for hours, the B&W set was turned off causing the picture to collapse into a line that, in turn, would shorten to a dot and gradually fade away. Phosphorus charged particles dancing and flickering their way the oblivion. Cathode Ray Tubes. And numerous other tubes. The electricqal nevous and circulatory system of the television. Do you rember the smell of tube tvs and radios? That warm heady elet5rical scent pulsating and coiling, coliing and pulsating it's way through the filiments of the tubes. The heat generated? Glass tubes pulsating and circulating, circulating and pulsating. That little hum it made as it was warming up?

1942 I Married a Witch

There is something about Veronica Lake that I cannot put into words. She trapped me with her witch's potion the first time I saw this classic. It is rumoured that she was very difficult to work with. Standing at 5 foot nothing, the right leading man was sometimes difficult to find. Alan Ladd made a 4 film noir pictures with her.

Robert Osbourne, Turner Classic Movies, claimed that Joel McCrea, her co-star in Sullivan's Travels, reputedly turned down the co-starring role in I Married a Witch, saying, "Life's too short for two films with Veronica Lake."

Fredric March usually played very serious roles like Jean Valjean in the 1935 Best Picture Oscar nominated film Les Misérables, or William Spence in the 1941 Best Picture Oscar nominated film One Foot in Heaven.

It was nice to see him in some lighter fare. His being cast in this film is, I think, almost the same as Bogey in We're No Angels (to be posted soon). "Serious Character" actor attempting some fluff. I don't mind the occasional lighter fare with them but I wouldn't want a steady diet of it. Funnily enough, the opposite, funny to serious, never worked for Bill Murray did it? He had some REAL STINKERS when he tried!!!

1942 Across the Pacific

This is the title frame from the opening credits of Across the Pacific. If you looking closely you will see that the names of the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea have been reversed. The same slide appears at the end of the film with the names in the correct locations. My guess is that this was done indentionally, as the United States was at war when this film was released, as a measure to confuse the enemy.

This 1942 gem contains 75% of the principal actors from the Maltese Falcon; Sydney Greenstreet, Mary Astor and Humphrey Bogart. While this is lesser known then Casablanca or To Have or Have Not, Bogie does a fantastic job portraying the traitorous Rick Leyland.

1937 Topper

A fun-loving couple, finding that they died and are now ghosts, decide to shake up the stuffy lifestyle of a friend of theirs. Based upon the novel by Thorne Smith, IMDB claims that Topper was the first film to be colourised. What a dubious epitaph for this quaint little comedy. Starring Constance Bennett, Cary Grant and Roland Young. Billie Burke, who played the Good Witch Glinda in the Wizard of Oz plays Topper's wife.

One of it's two sequels is available at archive.org

Paradisus Varadero

Here's a review of the resort I stayed at this past Christmas:

Departing from Toronto in December 19th, I spent the next week at the Paradisus Varadero. I opted from the Royal Service package offered through Sunwing vacations and was thoroughly pleased.

Both flight segments were with Sunwing airlines. My experience with them was exceptional even though both flights were delayed by roughly 2 hours. The airport and flight staffs were friendly and efficient. One problem is the 20 kgs of baggage allowed. I did not pack heavily and was over. Some arranging of items from checked to carry-on resolved that issue. It might be worth the $50 extra to pick your seat in advance and increase your entitlement to 30 kgs.

Arriving at Varadero, I was met by a taxi and delivered to the resort. A component of the Royal Service is private transfers to and from the resort. I loved check-in process for Royal Service as there was no standing around in a mob of people waiting for your turn. Just have a seat in the very comfortable high backed armchairs, fill in the registry and tell the bartender what you would like to drink. The porter then scoots you over to over bungalow (they are actually 2 storey buildings but why quibble) and carries the luggage in.

The suite was spectacular. Two double beds and a sitting area formed the main part of the suite. There was a high mounted LCD television that swiveled so it could be view from any part of the room. There was a bar setup in the room that had 4 750ml bottles (scotch, gin, vodka, and Cuban rum), a bottle of Chilean red wine, Spanish cava (sparkling wine), and a mini fridge with waters (still and sparkling), sodas, and juices. All of the above could be altered by speaking with your butler. Yes, there is a butler assigned to each room but more about that later. A walk-in closet completes living area of the suite.

The washroom appeared to be larger than my living room at home. I could be entered through a sliding door on either side of the bedroom. The toilet and bidet are off to the side in a small ante-room with a privacy door. There is a sink and massive amount of counter area in each side of the room. No need to wait while your partner is shaving or putting on make-up. The bath was a massive two-person jetted tub. The resort supplies superior quality bath towels and robes, bath salts and a toiletry pack as well. There is a shaving kit (cheap disposable razor – use at your peril), shower gel, shampoo, dental kit, comb, cotton swabs, and bar soap. The shower is outside in a very private area which is surrounded by a 3 metre high wall. Showering outside is an amazing experience.

I was in Suite 3632 and my maid Yacquiline was fantastic. The room was spotless every day. She made the effort to find out what my personal preferences were and then delivered. There is a nightly turn down service that was nice on those days that I had an afternoon nap so I didn’t have deal with a messy bed when I come back at night. I never really appreciated turn down before and normally wouldn’t give a fig about the condition of the bed sheets but this is Royal Service after all.

Cesar was my butler and he was great. He would arrange the a la carte reservations and look after any need I had. Many times he came looking for me when I was out and about on the resort if he needed me. I ate every breakfast at the Royal Service restaurant. There was a nice selection of pastries, juices and fresh fruit to go with the menu items. I had 3 minute soft boiled eggs, toast and bacon almost every morning. If you like your bacon crispy, ask for it buen hecho (well made).

Lunch was catch as catch can. A couple of days at the Royal Service as the lasagna was magnificent there. One day at the beach bbq; the grilled sardines were GREAT. A couple of days saw me eating at the poolside café for burgers and the rest were at the main buffet.
I visited all of the restaurants for my evening meal. The Royal Service was excellent with continental cuisine and French service. The menu included a cold and hot starter, the main plate and dessert. The Chateaubriand with sauce béarnaise was delicious.

The “Romantic” restaurant was very similar to the Royal Service but the food was not of the same quality. The onion soup was very salty. This was the most disappointing meal of the entire week.

The Japanese Restaurant was okay and provided me with an opportunity to meet follow guests as it is teppanyaki. There was myself and a family of 3. Just remember that you don’t go to Cuba if you love and MUST have Japanese food.

The Caribbean restaurant was fine but the portions were very small. I mean really small.

The Italian restaurant was primo. The margarita pizza was thin, crisp and large enough for two. This resort did a very good job at presenting pasta meals.

The Christmas Eve meal was the only evening meal I ate at the buffet. Their presentation was spectacular with chocolate displays, ice sculptures, handmade candy decorations, and Cuban delicacies to celebrate the holiday. The selection was varied and vast.

Talking about food, if you suffer from heartburn, bring your antacid with you. No Tums, or Rolaids, or any over the counter remedy is available. I visited the resort doctor and she had a bottle of Cuban “Maalox” sent over from the pharmacy. No charge for the doctor but $16 for the small bottle.

Normally, I will go sailing at least once a day. I didn’t get out once this time. The weather was too rough a couple of days and I was too busy the other ones. The free scuba was awesome. We drove across the island and drove in the Bay of Pigs. It was thrilling to be 15 metres down and overlook a sea cliff that went down another 750. I wasn’t told about the $20 CUC charge for a second dive and only brought a $10 CUC note with me. Another diver was in the same boat; pardon the pun, as me so we waited while the rest of the group went on the second dive. There was a hut along the side of the road that sold a 750 bottle of rum and 2 litre bottle of “Sprite” for $4.50. Needless to say, the time past very merrily, as did the bus ride back.

The drink selection at the Paradius was top shelf. Some brands were only available through the all inclusive package at the Royal Service bar. They could be had at the main lobby bar for a surcharge. Jorge Luis at the RS bar was a very competent barman. I look forward to meeting him again.

Would I return? Absolutely. The Paradisus was well worth the price. It is a wonderful resort and I thoroughly enjoyed my week there.

1958 Gigi

Gigi, a story about training young ladies to be mistresses, took the Best Picture Oscar in 1958. Here is the plot as discribed on Wikipedia:

Set in turn-of-the-20th century Paris, the film opens with Honoré Lachaille (Maurice Chevalier) among high society in the Bois de Boulogne. A charming old roué, he cynically remarks that "Like everywhere else, most people in Paris get married, but not all. There are some who will not marry, and some who do not marry. But in Paris, those who will not marry are usually men, and those who do not marry are usually women." So marriage is not the only option for wealthy young bon vivants like his nephew Gaston, who is bored with life. The one thing Gaston truly enjoys is spending time with Madame Alvarez, whom he calls Mamita, and especially her granddaughter, the precocious, carefree Gilberte, aka Gigi. Following the family tradition, Madame Alvarez sends Gigi to her sister, Great Aunt Alicia to be groomed as a courtesan and learn etiquette and charm. To Alicia, love is an art, and a necessary accomplishment for Gigi's social and economic future. The young girl initially is a very poor student who fails to understand the reasons behind her education. She enjoys spending time with Gaston, whom she regards as an elder brother.

After Gaston publicly embarrasses his cheating mistress and tries to rebuild his reputation with endless parties, he decides to take a vacation by the sea. Gigi proposes if she beats him at a game of cards he must take her and Mamita along. He accepts, and she happily wins. During their holiday, Gigi and Gaston spend many hours together, and the two learn Honoré and Mamita once were romantically involved before becoming comfortable friends. Alicia insists Gigi's education must increase dramatically if she is to catch a prize such as Gaston. Gigi is miserable with her lessons, but endures them as a necessary evil, though she still seems awkward and bumbling to her perfectionist grand-aunt. When Gaston sees Gigi in an alluring white gown, he tells her she looks ridiculous and storms out, but later returns and apologizes, offering to take her to tea to make amends. Mamita refuses, telling him a young girl seen in his company might be labeled in such a way as could damage her future. Enraged yet again, Gaston storms out and wanders the streets of Paris in a fury.

Realizing he has fallen in love with Gigi, who no longer is the child he thought her to be, Gaston returns to Mamita and proposes he take Gigi as his mistress, promising to provide the girl with luxury and kindness. The young girl declines the offer, telling him she wants more for herself than to be passed between men, desired only until they tire of her and she moves on to another. Gaston is horrified at this portrayal of the life he wishes to give her, and leaves stunned. Gigi later decides she would rather be miserable with him than without him. Prepared to accept her fate as Gaston's mistress, Gigi emerges from her room looking like a woman. Gaston is enchanted and takes her to dinner at Maxim's, where she seems perfectly at ease. The stares of other patrons make Gaston extremely uncomfortable as he realizes Gigi's interpretation of things may have been accurate after all, and discovers his love for her makes the idea of her as his mistress an unbearable one. He leaves the party with Gigi in tow and takes her home without explanation. After wandering the streets throughout the night, he returns to Mamita's home and humbly asks for Gigi's hand in marriage.

The final sequence reverts to Honoré Lachaille, proudly pointing out Gaston and Gigi riding in their carriage in the Bois de Boulogne, which is filled with high society. The couple are elegant, beautiful, and happily married. Honoré has been a framing device for the film, which can be seen as a romantic victory of love over cynicism
